The Chamber ALX August Spotlight: Ru Toyama

“My Military background greatly prepared me for life as a professional during a pandemic because it was in our training and nature in the military and Naval Academy time to adapt and overcome in almost every and any situation.” Ru Toyama hadn’t formally prepared for his life during a pandemic, much like his entry into being a loan officer after leaving military service, but he has learned to pivot and work with his clients to still help them with the biggest financial investment of their lives during a time of insecurity.

Ru joined Monument Home Loans as a Loan Officer, NMLS # 1528382, after serving 10 years in the United States Navy, looking to start a new chapter with his wife, Sharon, who is a Realtor with TTR Sotheby's International Realty, Old Town Alexandria Office. Saying good-bye to constant relocating, 9-5 hours behind a desk and uniforms, Ru was interested in a career in which he could have more freedom to work when and where was convenient for him, and of course his clients. The world of real estate and mortgage was a perfect match. Today his days are more about staying organized, answering emails and giving quality care to his customers until they come to the closing table for their new home or refinance. His motto and mindset with each new client is “...even though you can afford more doesn't mean that is what you should do. Thus it is my job to get to know each client through the process and find out what exactly they're looking for and what is logical and fits their budgets.” A level of care his customers will appreciate for years to come.

“I love what I'm doing because this career allows me to somewhat continue to serve...'

With the help of his mentors, like Branch Manager Robert Martinson and associations like the the Chamber ALX, Ru has been able to continue to serve his customers and community. “I love what I'm doing because this career allows me to somewhat continue to serve, although not necessarily the same as the service to our country but this career field does allow me to truly focus to serve each client of mine by guiding them and leading them through likely the biggest financial transaction/decision in their life!' Since joining Monument Home Loans, Ru has been recognized as a local Alexandria Rising Star member in 2017 and was honored with being a member of the Chamber ALX's 40 Under 40 recipient in 2018. They were also runner ups in 2019 as a small business, Best in Business award.
