With his trademark style leading as an introduction before he even opens his mouth, Havin Baucom II has established himself as someone who knows how to dress, regardless of where he is or what he’s doing. In fact, as the owner of an eponymous wardrobe consulting service, he’s made being well-dressed and dressing others his business. And while his company, H. Baucom, may be a side-hustle to his work for the Executive Office of the President, the impeccably dressed thirty-something is never off the clock when it comes to fashion. Giving us some insight into his best tips for fall dressing, Baucom is sharing that knowledge with VIP Alexandria and our readers.

I’d love to offer some practical advice for dealing with changing weather conditions as we enter my favorite season of the year, fall, while also maintaining your sense of style. One way to stay weather appropriate while keeping a cool look is through weatherproof outer layers and accessory items such as Chelsea boots. Combine with a practical crossbody bag and layer tops like denim button ups with lightweight sweaters or sweatshirts, and you’ll have your perfect after work/weekend look. Investing in an overshirt and incorporating richer, deeper hues into your wardrobe adds seasonal flair. Additionally, bulking up your clothing with heavier options allows you to maintain your personal style while staying warm.

Technical raincoats made with durable materials like Gore-Tex and featuring taped seams are great choices to keep you protected from downpours. It's worth noting that modern weatherproof outerwear comes in stylish designs that are more fashion-forward than utilitarian. If traditional options like trenchcoats or fisherman's jackets don't appeal to you, consider looking for water-repellent bombers made from waxed or coated cotton. These options combine functionality with contemporary aesthetics, allowing you to stay dry and stylish during the unpredictable weather of autumn.

A sports coat or blazer is a versatile and classic piece that can elevate your outfit during this upcoming season, as well. When choosing a blazer, there are a few factors to consider such as fit, fabric and style. Look for pieces that have a tailored fit, as this provides a polished and flattering look. Also consider getting it tailored specifically to your body type. In terms of fabric, options like wool, tweed or cotton blends offer durability and a touch of sophistication. When it comes to style, consider the occasion as well as your personal preference. A navy or charcoal blazer is a timeless choice that can be easily dressed up or down. If you want to add a touch of personality, you can explore different patterns such as checks, plaids or subtle textures. Experimenting with different colors and patterns can help you express your individual style while still maintaining a professional appearance when needed. Ultimately, the best blazer for you will depend on your personal style, body shape and the occasions on which you intend to wear it. It's always a good idea to try on different options and see what fits and suits you best.

Did someone say suits?! Keep in mind, a well-tailored suit doesn’t require a slim frame, quiff hairstyle and clean-shaven, square jaw to achieve a suave and polished appearance. It's important to acknowledge that it takes more than just genetics to consistently make a suit work—it requires style, knowledge and attention to detail. Taking cues from Omari Hardwick in the Starz’s series Power (my personal choice for the best-dressed character in a TV series) to achieve a suave suit look like his, this requires selecting suits that fit impeccably, paying attention to proportions and choosing quality fabrics. Tailoring is crucial to ensure a sleek and flattering silhouette. Pairing the suit with fitted shirts, appropriate accessories and polished shoes further enhances the overall ensemble. Additionally, understanding color combinations, experimenting with different patterns and incorporating subtle details can elevate the overall look. Confidence and the ability to carry oneself with poise also play a significant role in making a suit work effortlessly.
