Twenty-two years ago, Glynn Jones and Tony Hughes came to Miami from Manchester, England for a long vacation and just decided not go home. Enjoying the Southern Florida lifestyle for five years, they decided to go on another adventure and ended up in Alexandria, Virginia. Once they decided to make Alexandria their home, they opened Glynn Jones Salon on King Street with just four chairs, a receptionist, and Glynn as their only stylist. Since then, the salon has expanded to 30 chairs, 25 employees, and a second location in DuPont Circle.
Glynn and Tony beam with pride over what they have built in the last 17 years in Alexandria. “We are a family, some of our stylists have been with us for 16 years,” Tony tells us. Stylists coming straight out of school come to work as an apprentice with Glynn. Most remain at the salon, while some move on. One even went on to open his own salon in NYC after his apprenticeship.

Like most businesses, the salon was hit hard with the shutdowns and was closed for nine weeks. During that time, they decided to begin a ROOTS 2 GO program where clients could receive the exact formula to cover their roots until the salon could reopen. Clients knew this system wasn’t going to be at the same level as seeing their stylist, but appreciated the loving care of their salon family still making them feel human during a time where nothing felt like real life. They continue the program, even with things reopening, to help those clients still not comfortable going out and about. Some clients even order their perfect color to be shipped across the country.
While Glynn is the man behind the hair, Tony is the man behind their BritBoss brand. BritBoss is the men's grooming product line you can find in the salon and online, including shampoo, conditioner, body wash, beard oil, and pomade designed for their male clientele. After plenty of compliments on their unique styles, a clothing store was added to BritBoss’ website and is available in their store in DC. The clothing brand is mainly men’s clothing, but have added some women’s pieces due to demand. All shoes are designed by Anthony Hughes and are made in Italy. They describe the clothing as casual and sporty, and like Hughes and Jones, and imported from the UK, Italy, France, or Greece.
