More than 5,000 people participated in the 44th annual Alexandria Turkey Trot in the heart of Del Ray. The flat, 5-mile course began and ended at George Washington Middle School. Participants included professional and amateur runners of all ages and skill levels, competing for best times and cash prizes. Cash prizes were awarded by age groups. The first Alexandria Turkey Trot took place in 1975, though the first turkey mascot didn’t make an appearance until 1977.
